Complex Hand Care treatment and management
Community Physio provides a range of handing care treatments for people who have contractures of their hands.
Hand contractures can occur for a variety of reasons such as joint restriction or an increase in muscle tone due to a neurological impairment. It is really important to maintain flexibility within the hands and this can be helped by using orthotics to help support fingers in a resting position.
Unfortunately, we have seen instances where family and carers have been unable to move the fingers due to pain and high tone, therefore contractures have developed and sores where the nails pressed into the palm.
Together we can review your symptoms and determine an individual treatment plan that should help ease pain and development movement.
Joint contracture prevention and management
Joints can get restricted due to poor pain management, high tone and lack of movement. This can then lead to sleep problems, which further aggravates joint contractures taking the patient into a vicious cycle of pain and movement deterioration.
We have found that over the years, gentle movement of the limb can prevent this situation from happening, however we also need to tackle the bigger picture of pain or muscle tone in order to prevent joint contractures.
Sometimes people are unable to do this for themselves and often seek assistance and advise. Orthotics can be helpful in certain circumstances and Community Physio can support and advised you through this process.
