As we age, our muscles weaken, our bones become more brittle and we start to lose our balance. Balance impairment is a major risk factor for falls among older people and falls related physiotherapy is a technique that can be used to help strengthen muscles and help prevent falls.
Community Physio Ltd. has over two decades working with the elderly, developing and improving their balance, strength and general wellbeing through fall prevention strategies.
Also, if a person has had a fall, we can help their rehabilitation through our progressive, planned program of stretching, exercise and pain management. Having the support of a trained professional greatly improves the probability of a full and speedy fall recovery.
Its so important as we get older to prevent our balance and strength from deteriorating, we specialise here in bespoke exercise programmes. Read my handy hints and tips on falls prevention and if you want to learn more then don’t hesitate to contact us.
Falls Prevention
Falls Prevention
Prevention is better than Cure ! How many times have we heard this phrase and not given it a second thought?
Unfortunately, as we all grow older, it's importance becomes paramount as fall prevention plays a massive part to help avoid unnecessary stress, pain and discomfort.
Community Physio has a range of tried and tested fall prevention programs, best practice training and tips to help reduce the probability of a fall related injury.
We work along side the patient to develop their understanding of fall prevention strategies so that they are better equipped in their own environment. As part of our service, we also can perform a periodic risk assessment of their home environment, again, with the aim to help eliminate the main fall factors.
So, DO NOT wait until you, or a member of your family has had a fall to contact us, as working with you/them to help prevent falls happening in the first place, is a far better approach.
Falls Rehabilitation
Falls Rehabilitation
For all of us, coping with a fall can be hard and emotionally draining. However for a elderly person, coping with a fall can be an extremely traumatic experience as it often leads to reduced mobility and severe pain. It is therefore essential that all of us, specifically the elderly, get good advice and strong support to help to firstly deal with the change and then fully recover.
At Community Physio we firstly establish baselines of appropriate outcome measures as part of a pre-intervention assessment, against which ongoing or post-interventions outcome scores can be compared.
Patient goal setting (as opposed to therapy goals) forms the first part of our rehabilitation programme. We develop the patients short and longer term SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed) inline with their beliefs, attitudes and preferences. At Community Physio Ltd., we apply the appropriate measure to the individual, including:
- Berg Balance Scale
- Timed Up and Go Test
- Performance-Orientated Mobility Assessment
- 180 degree turn
- Four-square step test
We use appropriate reliable and valid outcome measures and include exercise components for gait, balance, coordination and function. We also include strength training and three dimensional activities and ensure balance training is sufficiently dynamic.
As part of our service, we also provide the patience with pain management consultation and advise, as managing the pain can be a major factor in a speedy and successful recovery.
